The former Liverpool captain admits Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata does look like a good signing after previously expressing his concerns.
Jamie Redknapp has admitted that he was wrong to suggest Alvaro Morata would be unable to replace Diego Costa at Chelsea. The Spain international moved to the Premier League champions in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window after the Blues failed to sign Everton forward Romelu Lukaku. Antonio Conte was desperate to sign a striker after the Italian coach gave Costa permission to leave the Premier League champions despite the controversial forward contributing 20 goals to their title-winning campaign. Chelsea signing Morata has already hit the ground running with an impressive return of three goals in four games and what’s even more remarkable is all have been scored using the 24-year-old’s head. The Spanish striker failed to get on the score sheet in a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur but Morata should get his chance to test an uncertain Arsenal defence at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Redknapp delivered a glowing verdict on Morata after previously expressing his concerns about the former Juventus striker. “I said at the start of the year that one of the biggest gambles was doing what they have done with Costa and then playing Morata, but at the moment it seems to be working,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “Morata is one of the best headers of the ball I have seen in a long time. He has an incredible technique. He heads everything into the floor so it’s almost impossible for the keeper to save. “He is not as good as Costa outside the box, and not as clever with the ball, but he looks a good player and he is a goalscorer. When the ball is in the box he will score.” Morata won two Serie A titles and two Coppa Italias with Juventus before the Spanish forward moved to Real Madrid last summer. The 24-year-old won La Liga and the Champions League during his one-season stay back at his boyhood club.
