Health Minister Successfully Separates Conjoined Twins.

In most countries, ministers abstain from most unconventional duties and focus more on the paper work and delegated assignments.

But that's not the case for Madagascar's Health Minister Mamy Lalatiana Andriamanarivo, who defied all odds by successfully operating on five-month-old Siamese twins, Mitia and Fitia, who weighed 13 kilograms (29 pounds) and were delivered by caesarian section in Madagascar. And in the process saving the island a small fortune as a comparable surgery would have coat €100,000 ($120,000) if performed overseas.

Surgery was performed at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona hospital on September 13 and the twins are in good condition.

Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest nations and more than 90 percent of its 25 million people live on less than $2 per day. Almost half of children under five years suffer development issues.
