- NANS noted that it was imperative that they be consulted , as they were critical stakeholders in the education sector
- The association noted that ASUU had been using students as their bargaining power, and stated that their interests must be prioritized at all times The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been warned against embarking on any future strike action without prior notice, by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
According to Vanguard, the association also urged the federal government to channel recovered loots into the educational sector.
Information gathered says that the group made its comments in a statement released by its president, Chinonso Obasi, in Abuja, on Sunday September 10. The group insisted that henceforth, it must be consulted by ASUU before they decide on embarking on another strike action. The statement read in part: “As critical stakeholders in the education sector, it is imperative that ASUU consults NANS. “Anytime ASUU wants to embark on strike, it is proper for them to consult student leaders led by NANS.
“ASUU should also apply other means of negotiation so that the strike will not have a direct negative impact on the students. “ASUU has been striking to use students as their bargaining power. The interest of students must be considered and prioritized at all times. “Part of the resolution was that an appeal should be made to the Federal Government to channel the loots recovered from anti-graft agencies to the education sector.”
The news came after a closed door meeting between ASUU and a government delegation in Abuja which started 1:38pm on Thursday, September 7 and ended 2:15 a.m. on Friday, September 8. The leadership of ASUU, however, said though it accepted the proposal presented by the government, it will take the proposal to its members and get back to the government in a week.
